Time For Clark Hunt To Step Up

December 16th, 2009 | by Ryan Jones |

As many of you know, the Kansas City Chiefs have the longest active sell out streak in the NFL at 156 games.

That streak was in jeopardy last week when 3,500 tickets needed to be sold to achieve “sell out” status.  After receiving an extension from the league, enough tickets were sold and the streak extended one more game, avoiding a local TV blackout.

This week the Chiefs once again are having trouble avoiding a blackout.  The number of tickets that have to be sold has risen to 5,500 and with Kansas City in the midst of a 3-10 season– and three game losing streak — it’s looking more and more likely that Sunday’s game against the Browns will be blacked out within 75 miles of Arrowhead.

Our good friends over at Arrowhead Pride have started a campaign to convince Chiefs fans to help keep the streak alive.  I think this is a great idea and applaud anyone that puts down their hard earned money to watch the Chiefs play for pride this weekend.  With that being said, it doesn’t have to come to that in order for the countless fans of the Red & Gold to see their team on local TV and for the Chiefs to carry the longest sell out streak into next year.

Amazing Chiefs fans are the reason that Arrowhead Stadium was once the most feared building in the league and why they have gone nearly 20 years without a blackout.  It’s time for this franchise — in the midst of one of the worst stretches in the team’s history — to give back to their fans and the community as a whole.

Clark Hunt — Chairman of the Board and son of Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt — needs to step up and buy whatever tickets remain for the team to officially become a sell out in the league’s eyes.

Armed with thousands of tickets, he can walk the streets of Kansas City playing the role of Santa Claus as he hands out tickets to those that in this economy cannot afford such a luxury.  With all of the amazing charity work that the players and staff of the Chiefs do throughout the year it’s not as if there are a shortage of organizations they have relationships with that they could allot tickets to.

I truly believe Kansas City Chiefs fans are the best in the league.

It’s time for Clark Hunt to show he feels the same way.
