Please Release Mike Brown
October 12th, 2009 | by Ryan Jones |Now.
Not after the season. Not next week. Today. This minute.
As all of the various highlight shows replay both of Miles Austin’s long touchdowns against the Chiefs, the only Chiefs player you see is Maurice Leggett. The second year cornerback had the Dallas wide receiver in his grasp each time but couldn’t finish the play.
What you probably didn’t catch was that each time Mike Brown was two steps late getting over to Austin from his safety position. Should Leggett have stopped Austin? Yes. But at the same time Brown has to be there to finish whatever the cornerback fails to.
Even if you want to completely lay the blame at Leggett’s feet, there is still reason to give Brown the boot. Outside of a gift fumble recovery, Brown was a step late all day and has been all season long.
In the third quarter Tashard Choice ripped off a 36 yard touchdown run to bring the Cowboys to within three points of the Chiefs. As Choice exploded through the line and Brown stepped up, the Chiefs safety was easily blocked and never got a hand on the Cowboys running back.
In overtime — even before he was late on the game winning catch and run by Austin — Tony Romo just missed a wide open Jason Witten down the middle of the field. Why was he so unbelievably open? You guessed it… Mike Brown was two steps too late.
It’s time to move on and see if the young DaJuan Morgan can get the job done because it’s clear that Brown’s best days are behind him.
There’s no strong in this safety.
